Disabled and Homeless Veteran

Our client has been homeless veteran for over 5 years. He had started the Social Security Disability process over 3 years ago, however, due to his severe impairments was simply unable
to complete the paperwork needed to officially apply for benefits. He had been carrying the Social Security Disability paperwork with him in a small bag that he had his limited possessions
in. He also was without a photo identification, thus, he was unable to get assistance with housing or a subsidized cell phone.

We were able to successfully advocate for him.

We reached out to his local Social Service Agency to obtain a voucher to help him obtain a valid photo identification with the $30.00 fee waived. Additionally, working within our client’s obstacles we were to schedule meetings with him to complete paperwork at his local library. We used our business address for this client, as he was residing in a various homeless shelters depending on available beds.

We made sure that all his paperwork was timely sent over to the Social Security Administration. A brief was written describing his severe medical impairments and summarizing his vocational profile was sent to the Disability Determination Office for SSA.

We were able to secure a quick favorable decision for disability benefits on his behalf.

What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?: SSDI (Title 2) is a payroll tax-funded federal insurance program. Its purpose is to provide income to people unable to work because of a disability.
How many different types of Social Security disability benefits are there?: SSA offers two types of disability benefits. One is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and the other is Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Who can get disability benefits under SSDI?: Under SSDI, three categories of individuals can qualify for benefits: 1) a disabled insured worker under full retirement age; 2) an individual disabled since childhood (before age 22) who is a dependent of a parent entitled to Social Security disability or retirement benefits, or who was a dependent of a deceased insured parent; and 3) a disabled widow or widower, age 50-60, if the deceased spouse was insured under Social Security.
How does Social Security Administration (SSA) define disability?: Under the Social Security Act, “disability” means you are not able to work due to a documented physical or mental impairment that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
When should I apply for Social Security Disability Benefits?: You should apply for benefits as soon as you and your doctors agree you have a medical condition that’s expected to last at least one year. You are not eligible for SSDI if your condition is not expected to last a full year. Often people have to wait for a while to see what happens with their medical conditions. If you have been struggling to work, in spite of your disability, and know the condition is not going away, you should apply as soon as they stop working.
Is it difficult to get Social Security disability benefits?: The SSA denies 65 percent of the people filing initial disability applications. It also can take a long time, on average one to two years. It is important to have competent Advocate during the process to ensure your claim has the best chance possible to be approved.
Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to get SSDI and/or SSI?: Non-citizens can apply for SSDI and/or SSI if they are in the United States legally. However, if you don’t have valid documents, particularly a social security card, your claim will be denied fairly quickly.
What role does age play in being awarded SSDI benefits?: The older you are, the more SSA believes you may not be able to train for new work, or are less able to adjust to a new work environment. In effect, it’s always easier to win a claim for SSDI benefits if you are older than if you are younger.
How do I know when I became disabled?: Usually, your Alleged Onset Date (AOD) is the date upon which your physical or mental impairment(s) made it impossible for you to continue working.
